When it comes to driving instructor training, the choice of options can often be very confusing to say the least. Do I go to one of the big national colleges or schools I see advertised on the tv or will they see me as just another number on the books? Should I go to my local driving instructor and ask them to teach me or will they not really know what's required?

Unlike the big national training colleges who train people 2 or 3 to a car, we do all our driving instructor training on a one to one basis, why should this make a difference? Well for your part 2 and 3 tests you are only allowed 3 attempts at each test, so for instance for your adi part 3 test you need a minimum of 40 hours training, if there are 3 trainees in a car, that means you get 13 hours training and 26 hours of watching other people train to become a driving instructor!
So let's do some simple math shall we? If you had 18 hours part 2 driving instructor training and 13 hours part 3 driving instructor training that's 31 hours. If you paid let's say an average of £3,500 divided by 31 = £112.90 per hour and I can be pretty sure that you will NOT pass your adi part 3 with 13 hours training!
What about my local driving instructor? The DSA recommends that you ONLY use driving instructor trainers who are on the ORDIT register. The trouble is that sometimes your local instructor may not have a clue as to what is required by the DSA when it comes to driving instructor training. They may have passed many years ago and not realised how things of changed, we recently had a trainee come to us for instructor training and his trainer was still slamming a clipboard on the dashboard to say stop in the emergency stop! This hasn't been done for years!!! Other instructors may have just recently passed and see it as an easy way of making money without having given it any real thought.
Qualifying Exam Pass Rates
The pass rates for each of the three parts of the examination in 2006/2007 were:
Theory test (part 1): 49%
Test of driving ability (part 2): 45%
Test of instructional ability (part 3): 28%
Just so you know what you are letting yourself in for and how hard it is to become a driving instructor.
- Out of 100 people who went for the exam, 49% got through the first part.
- Out of those 49 - ONLY 45% got through part two so 45% of 49 means that out of the original 100 applicants only 27 people got past the adi part 2
- THEN out of those 27 remaining trainees only 28% ACTUALLY QUALIFIED!! or in other words, out of 100 people
- ONLY 19 people qualified to become driving instructors
So for every 5 people that train 4 WILL FAIL!!

I have a 75% pass rate which means that with me, for every 5 that train - 4 qualify!!

Providing Proof of Success
Can your driving instructor trainer provide details of previous trainees that have passed with them? This way you know that they do know what they are teaching and that they are not just after your money.
Also ask what there pass rates are. Just because something is the biggest doesn't mean it is therefore the best! Some of the biggest colleges or schools for driving instructors are often the worst at training, as they see you as another £4000 rather than a potential colleague.
Will all your trainers be ORDIT registered? Will you have the same one each time? Will they come to you?
